I grew up in greater Los Angeles. I went to school in Compton. So when I heard about the NWA biopic I was too excited!
NWA, an abbreviation for Niggaz Wit Attitudes, was revolutionary in the mid to late 80’s. Their fearless style of gangsta rap was aggressive and intentionally controversial. During a time where black neighborhoods were filled with police brutality and racial profiling, crack and other drugs taking over, and gang violence recurring within the blink of an eye, NWA used rap to draw attention to these issues. No, the lyrics were not pretty, friendly, or nice. But they were very REAL.
Due to the explicitness of their lyrics NWA was not played on MTv and had trouble getting air time. They eventually received a letter from FBI warning them about their lyrics of assault and threats on law enforcement. It is because of NWA that the Parental Advisory labels are placed on music with explicit lyrics. Their lack of airtime was made up for by the publicity they received for their aggressive gangsta nature. Their debut album “Straight Outta Compton” went double platinum.
I think a biopic of NWA is a great idea. The film is still in casting mode, missing 2 of the 5 group members. The movie is set to release in August of 2015. Ice Cube will be played by his son, O’Shea Jackson, Jr, and Corey Hawkins will play Dr. Dre. Eazy-E will be portrayed by relative newcomer Jason Mitchell. The above picture was tweeted by both Ice Cube and Dr. Dre confirming the film’s making.
